Use the Secret Send To Menu Items

When you right-click on any file or folder, you can use the Send To menu to create a zipped version, or send the file to an application, but in Windows 7 there are hidden items on the Send To menu that can't be seen by default.
All you have to do is hold down the Shift key, then right-click on a file and access the Send To folder—you'll see a whole bunch of new items in the list, like special folders, and even an item for each one of your drives. It's a really useful tip for quickly sending a file to the flash drive you just plugged into the PC, without having to do anything else.

Open a Command Prompt from Any Folder

This is one of those tips that most real geeks already know, but chances are there's somebody reading this that doesn't know about it—if you hold down the Shift key while right-clicking on any folder, including the desktop background, you'll see a new item for "Open command window here", that will open a command prompt with that folder as the default path.
This tip only works in Windows 7 or Vista, for Windows XP you'll need to use a registry hack to accomplish the same thing. We can't mention this tip without telling you how to do the opposite—you can open a file browser from your current command prompt directory as well.

Hide Secret Data Inside Any File

There's any number of great ways to hide data from prying eyes—TrueCrypt, anyone? But if you want to simply hide some text data inside a secret "compartment", you can abuse the Alternate Data Streams feature in the underlying NTFS file system. All you have to do is open up a command prompt, and then use a command similar to this:

notepad SomeFile.txt:SecretWordHere.txt

The special filename with the colon and second filename tells NTFS to actually store the data in an alternate stream, instead of the regular file. You can put whatever you want into the file, and nobody will be able to access it unless they know the command to retrieve it.

Tile or Cascade Specific Windows

Sure, Windows 7 has the awesome Aero Snap feature that lets you drag windows to the side of the screen to fill one side, but what if you want to cascade them, or tile them stacked on top of each other?
Back in the XP and Vista days this was relatively simple—you could hold down the Ctrl key while selecting multiple windows on the taskbar, and then right-click on any of them to tile or cascade them. For Windows 7, you can do the same thing, but you'll need to open up Task Manager instead, hold Ctrl, select the open windows, and then you can cascade them from there.

Undo an Accidental File Move or Deletion With the Keyboard

Have you ever tried to select a bunch of files while holding the Ctrl key, and then accidentally copied all of them because you slightly moved your mouse? Maybe you just deleted a file and don't feel like hunting it down in the Recycle bin. In either case, you can use the Ctrl+Z shortcut key to immediately reverse whatever you didn't mean to do.
Readers will probably point out that you can also do this from the context menu in Windows 7, but it's surprising how many people don't realize the keyboard shortcut works.

Navigate the Open / Save Dialogs With the Keyboard

Opening or saving files can be so very tedious when your application doesn't start with the right default folder, but instead of clicking and clicking your mouse to get where you're going, you can simply use the keyboard to change the folder.
You can use ".." without the quotes to go up a folder, use shell:desktop to change to the desktop folder, or just start typing in the full path to a file.

Use the Secret Trick to Close Windows Explorer

Have you ever wondered how to restart the Start Menu? The more tech-savvy among you probably know that you can just pop open Task Manager and kill the explorer.exe process, but there's actually another way to do it built right into Windows 7 and Vista—it's just a bit of a secret.
Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys, then open up the start menu, and right-click anywhere on the blank space. You'll see a new menu with an Exit Explorer item on it, which will immediately terminate the desktop shell—keep in mind to reopen it you'll need to use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, and then File –> Run and type in explorer.exe.
That's not the only right-click menu trick you can do here, however—if you want to open up the Start Menu folder in Windows 7, you can right-click on the All Programs menu item to access the old Start Menu context menu from previous versions of Windows.

Create a Zip File with the Same Name as a Selected File

If you regularly use the built-in Send To –> Compressed (zipped) folder feature to create zip files in Windows, you might notice that it seems to randomly pick a filename for the generated file. If you want to save the step of renaming the file, you can make sure that you right-click on top of the file that you want to have the same name.
For instance, if we had right-clicked on the Readme.txt file in the screenshot and used the Send To –> Compressed feature, the resulting file would have been called Readme.zip. Since that's not very helpful, it's better to right-click on one of the selected HTGBack.x files, which will give us HTGBack.zip instead.

Show the XP Alt-Tab Prompt in Windows 7

This tip isn't so much useful as an interesting trick that you can show your geek friends—you can trigger the old XP Alt-Tab dialog even in Windows 7 with Aero enabled by using a series of shortcut keys. Pin a Folder to the Start Menu

It's easy to pin any application to the Start Menu by just right-clicking on the icon, but folders aren't quite as easy—or are they? There's a bunch of complicated registry hacks out there that enable the "Pin to Start Menu" item for folders, but it's so much simpler to just drag the folder to the Start button, and then drop the folder wherever you want it in the menu.

Remove Old Drivers by Showing Hidden Devices in Device Manager

Once you've upgraded your PC's hardware, you won't see the old devices sitting around anymore in the Device Manager, but rest assured that they are still there. If you want to clean up all the old drivers, you can use a special trick to enable hidden devices by simply typing the following into a command prompt:

The world of HTTP protocol headers is something that even geeks don't usually have to deal with, much less normal people. 4 Simple solutions to high-tech problems

1. Wet gadgets

News flash: Gadgets and water rarely mix. If you do manage to leave your cell phone, camera, or other battery-powered gear out in the rain — or worse, drop them in a toilet — the prognosis is usually pretty grim.

Solution: Before you give up hope, try dropping your soaked gear into a Tupperware container full of rice to draw out the moisture. Or, as a general preventative measure to keep moisture away, save some silica gel packs (you know, the ones you'll find in boxes of new shoes) and stuff them in your cell phone or camera case.

2. Scratched DVDs and CDs

There's nothing quite as annoying as a skipping music CD or a DVD that randomly jumps seconds or minutes ahead, without warning. In some cases, you might be dealing with a dirty laser in your CD or DVD deck; more often, however, the culprit is a scratched disc.

The good news is that it is possible to repair scratches in the polycarbonate plastic coating that protects the underlying layer of data on a DVD or CD, as long as the scratch isn't too deep.

Solution: Polish the scratches with a little furniture cleaner, perhaps with a follow-up dose of car polish. Just be sure to start from the center of the disc and rub outward, in a straight line; whatever you do, don't rub in circles.

3. Work PCs that sign you out too quickly

Code-clearance NSA operatives performing top-secret data entry at secure terminals should probably skip this tip. For the rest of us, however, here's an easy way to keep your paranoid PC from signing you out the moment you turn away from the screen.

Solution: Take off your watch (assuming you still have a watch, of course) and lay your mouse on top of its face; the ticking hands will fool the optics in your mouse into thinking it's still in motion.

4. Not enough D batteries for your flashlight

The power's out, and you've got your flashlight — minus one more D battery. D'oh!

Solution: If you've got a spare C battery floating around in your junk drawer, you're in luck; just drop it into the D-cell slot and fill the remaining space with a stack of quarters. Sounds crazy, but Becky promises it'll work. (Just make sure to pick up some more D batteries the next time you're in the hardware store.)

Now insert display:none; at the end of the above code.

Reach Run quickly
Here's a quicker way to reach the Run dialog box, if you don't want to go through the Start menu. Just hit the Windows key + R.

Looking for a better screen font display?
Enable ClearType, Microsoft's trademark font display technology, for a drastic improvement in screen font rendering. Right-click anywhere on your desktop. Now select Properties. Under the Appearance tab, click Effects. Check the box for Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts, and in the drop-down menu, select ClearType. Press OK, and apply the change.

Change your mouse pointer scheme
Bored of the same old arrow? To change your mouse pointer scheme, in the Control Panel, select Mouse and go to the Pointers tab. Scroll through the available schemes, pick one that you like and click Apply.

Check that your Windows Firewall is turned on
To make sure your Windows Firewall hasn't been accidentally disabled, go to your Control Panel and click Windows Firewall. Make sure the radio button for On (recommended) is selected. Add exceptions to your Firewall by going to the Exceptions tab and adding the programs that you think should have access to the Internet to the list of exceptions.

Instantly activate your screensaver

Change the look of folder icons
If you don't like the look of the folder icons on your desktop, you can change them. Right click on the folder, select Properties. Click on the Customize tab, and under the Folder icons area, click on the Change Icons button. Select the icon of your choice and select OK.

Minimize a Window to your taskbar

Display album art in your music folder thumbnails
If your music files are in WMA format, XP automatically picks up the album art and displays it, both in the folder thumbnail as well as in the Windows Media Player display. If your files are in MP3 format, you can download the album art from the Internet and then customize each folder to display it. But this takes a lot of time. A faster way around is to save each image as 'folder.JPG and put it in the correct folder. Once you do this, XP will pick up that image and use it as the thumbnail for the folder, and also use the image to display in Windows Media Player while playing songs from the album.

How to stop Windows Media Player from accessing your information
You may be uncomfortable with the idea of Windows Media Player collecting your information and sending it to various websites. You can stop this. Go to the Tools menu of Windows Media Player. Select Options and then go to the Player tab. Look for the check box that says "Allow Internet sites to uniquely identify your player?" and make sure it is not selected.

Opening folders with a single click
If you'd rather not have to double-click everything to open it, here's the way out. Go to My Computer, and select Options in the Tools menu. Choose Folder options. In the dialog box that opens, select the check box that says 'Single-click to open an item (point to select)', and click OK.

Making web pages available offline
You may occasionally need to refer to a website, and you may not be able to connect to the Internet at the time. An easy way out of the situation is to go to the Favourites tab in Internet Explorer, and click Add to Favourites. Do you believe the best employee in your company do not use his/her work computer to do personal stuff? Admit it, majority of us with a work computer in office will at least use them for personal stuff once in awhile. Having been spending 8 hours or more sitting in front of a computer will definitely have the feeling of work computer is a home away from home. While our home computer is office away from office. Sometimes you may treat your office computer like your home computer and instead of using it for office stuff like sending email, preparing reports and others office related work, you may sometimes try to use it to read blog, check out latest clips video on youtube, update your friendster or myspace account, check your personal email account and also keeping in touch with your friends or relatives using instant messaging.

I don't think all company likes you to do your personal stuff with an office computer, most probably 20% of your working hours will spend using it for personal stuff, and this will definitely decrease productivity. Partly employers want us to work while we're at work and it could be reason that they are afraid putting company at risk such as viruses, hackers and compromises the company's computer network. So what they can do is asked the IT department to block us to do stuff which you can do it with your home computer.

It may sounds disappointed, but it can't stop you from continue doing it. Here are some tips you can follow to allow you bypassing block your IT department had set. There's always a risk there using these tips but it definitely will keep yourself and secure your job while you're at it.

1) Can't send big files
Your Worry: Sometimes you may need to send big files, such as vacation pictures or movie files, by doing so you may actually hits the limit sending anything larger than few megabytes. The reason company quota their staff amount of data to be kept on the server because they want to avoid filling up the server and slowing the server down which eventually decrease performance.

No Worry: You can use online services such as yousendit.com, dropsend.com, megaupload.com or rapidshare.com. It's free, you had no worry to send large file online anymore but to keep you stay safe, look for reputable and well known site to upload which will prevent you from hackers stealing your information. If the site offers little information and not much information about the site, don't use it.

If the site's backers aren't immediately apparent, there are other clues that can help. Look for a "secure" icon — in Internet Explorer, it's a little lock on the bottom of the screen — which signifies that the site is using encryption to protect its visitors' confidential information. A logo from a security company such as VeriSign Inc., meanwhile, means VeriSign has confirmed the identity of the site's owner.

2) Can’t download/instal led software you wanted
Your Worry: Many companies prohibit their employee to download and install software illegally into work computer. You may require approval from IT department before using it. What if the software that you wanted is blacklisted.

Your company will only know that you had access the proxy website but they will never know within what web sites you had access using the proxy, because the proxy site travels to the site you want and displays it for you — so you can see the site without actually visiting it. Proxy.org, for one, features a list of more than 4,000 proxies. Alternative you can use vtunnel.com or securechannel. c om.

Another trick to accomplish the same thing is use Google's translation service, asking it to do an English-to-Engl ish translation. Just enter this — Google.com/tran slate?langpair= en|en&u=www.blo ckedsite.com — replacing "blockedsite. co m" with the Web address of the site you want to visit. Google effectively acts as a proxy, calling up the site for you.

Please keep this in mind that you may only use proxy sites or tunnel to access blocked sites and not all your surfing as information will travel to third party site before hitting the actual site you are visiting.

4) Keeping privacy using web email and instant messaging
Your Worry: Companies nowadays have ability to track employee internet usage behavior, they can monitor your work or personal email and also your IM chat conversations. Trillian is a proprietary multiprotocol instant messaging application for Windows created by Cerulean Studios that can connect to multiple IM services, such as AIM, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Bonjour, Jabber, and Skype networks.

If you still want to remains using your Instant Messaging software instead of multiprotocol instant messaging, try using Secway IM encryption software which install separately with your Instant Messaging. By using this, you can still use back your familiar IM application but just that there's additional application running separately to encrypt your IM conversations passing through the internet.

5) Clear traceable tracks on your computer
Your Worry: Either you use PC or laptop, but for company-owned laptop, chances are you use it for personal tasks. Many companies reserve the right to monitor all that activity, because the laptops are technically their property. What if one day someone use your computer to surf online porn and you are being caught? That's embarrassing right?

No Worry: Most browsers available in the market has the ability clear your tracks. In IE7, click on Tools, and then delete Browsing History. From there, you can either delete all your history by clicking Delete All or choose one or a few kinds of data to delete. In Firefox, just hit Ctrl-Shift-Del — or click Clear Private Data under the Tools menu. Ta da … you are safe from being traceable by your boss.

The best practices here is clear your private data as often as possible. If you really do not want your boss to know anything about, better still don't use work computer.

Setiap kali perisian dalam kategori Perisian Utiliti dipasang di dalamkomputer, kemungkinan besar ianya akan disetkan untuk dimulakan secaraautomatik setiap kali komputer dimulakan.
Walaupun kemudahan memulakan perisian secara automatik ini memudahkanpengguna, namun ianya akan memanjangkan masa untuk komputer dimulakan.
Lebihlebih lagi jika perisian terbabit tidak lagi diperlukan.
Kebanyakaan perisian yang dimulakan secara automatik ini boleh dilihatdi dalam kawasan 'System Tray', di sebelah kanan bawah Task Bar.
Jika banyak perisian yang sudah dimulakan, maka akan panjanglah senaraiikon di dalam 'System Tray' sesebuah komputer itu.Sebenarnya terdapat kemudahan yang mana kita boleh mengawal perisian-perisian yang muncul di dalam senarai 'System- Tray' daripadadimulakan secara automatik semasa komputer dimulakan.Untuk mencapai kemudahan pengawalan perisian yang muncul di dalam'System Tray',

ikuti langkah berikut:

1. Pilih Menu Start > Run >Taip: MSCONFIG Gambar Tip1
2. Pilih Tab Startup Gambar Tip2
3.Klikdiatas perisian yang kita tidak ingin dimulakan secara automatikapabila komputer dimulakan.Tekan OK apabila selesai.
4. Untuk pilihan terkini diaktifkan, komputer anda perlu dimulakansekali lagi. Tekan 'restart'.
5. Mesej peringatan akan dipaparkan setiap kali anda memulakankomputer selepas senarai diubah.
6. Jika anda ingin mengubah senarai perisian semula, ulangi langkahseperti di atas.Selepas memendekkan senarai perisian yang akan dimulakan apabilakomputer dihidupkan, anda akan dapati komputer anda boleh digunakansemula dengan lebih cepat berbanding sebelum itu.

Ia juga akan mengurangkan pengunaan memori, seterusnya akanmembolehkan komputer anda beroperasi dengan lebih cekap.

Speed up Windows XP's defrag operations

Did you know that you can speed up a defrag operation in Windows XP by restarting the system
beforehand? A simple way to speed up a defrag operation in Windows XP is to restart the system before
you launch Defrag. This allows the operating system to clear out the swap/paging file and
reset it to the default size. This lets Defrag focus strictly on the necessary data on the
hard disk, without having to stop and manage a huge swap file loaded with unneeded data.
Another approach to speeding up a defrag operation in Windows XP is to configure them to
occur immediately upon startup. Fortunately, you can do so easily with a simple registry
edit.

Follow these steps:

Launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce. Right-click the RunOncesubkey and select New String Value. Name the value Defrag and press [Enter] twice.
Type Defrag.exe c: /f in the Value Data text box, and click OK. Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows.
The defrag operation will begin when you type in your password and press [Enter]. (Keep in
mind that values added to the RunOnce key are removed immediately after the command has been
run.)

Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Professional editions.
